Nafrece (Japanese: ナフレス, Nafuresu) is one of the two fictional countries in the world of Madlax, the other being Gazth-Sonika.

Description

Details about Nafrece like its population, climate and location are unknown. However, it seems a modern and peaceful country, at least on the surface. The world-wide crime organization Enfant operates in Nafrece. Many of its doings are done under the cover of a large company called Bookwald Industries. Margaret Burton lives in Nafrece.

Location and influence

Though its position in the world is never mentioned in the series, one might think that Nafrece could be located on the European continent, more specifically that it resembles France, given the many similarities with it. In particular, the unnamed city where some of the main events of the series take place, and where Margaret lives with her maid Elenore, resembles Paris. All this could be supported by the many elements present in the series: from the presence in the city of a tower that closely resembles the Eiffel Tower, to the architectural style of the buildings, and to some French writings on shop signs.

Notes & trivia

• Although most of the characters travels from Nafrece to Gazth-Sonika through the series, Madlax never leaves her country, in fact never visiting Nafrece.
• Nafrece is an inexact anagram of "France" in a phonic sense due to both Japanese katakana for Nafrece (ナフレス) and France (フランス).
• Fans speculate that Nafrece is located in Europe since there is an lattice tower like that of the Eiffel Tower in reality.
• The name Nafrece has been reused in other anime series Best Student Council (2005), Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid (2015), and Birdie Wing (2022). Interestingly, they were also written by Writer Yosuke Kuroda.
